The Machine That Profits From Our Pain

The Machine That Profits From Our Pain
Part 2 of “Blocked Everywhere: The Parental Discard Trap”
A single text destroyed my world and sent me searching desperately for answers online. I thought I was finding help. I was wrong.
The Compulsion
What came next was even harder to see: the pattern.
It became a compulsion. Not because I was weak, but because it was built that way.
The cycle looked like this: When pain struck—walking past my child’s empty bedroom, seeing their favorite food at the store, scrolling through old photos—I felt the familiar ache in my chest. The silence roared back. So I reached for the fix: a post, a group comment, a book. For a moment, it steadied me.
Then the thread ended. The book closed. The phone screen went dark. And the silence returned stronger than before.
The hurt came back amplified. So I reached again.
It was the same cycle, over and over: hurt, seek relief, temporary calm, deeper crash, repeat. I wasn’t the problem. The system was designed to work this way. Exploiters knew it, and they profited from it.
🔄 THE TRAUMA CYCLE
1. PAIN STRIKES → (Empty bedroom, old photo, holiday)
2. REACH FOR “FIX” → (Google search, book, group)
3. TEMPORARY RELIEF → (“I’m not alone!”)
4. DEEPER CRASH → (Silence returns stronger)
5. INCREASED DESPAIR → (More desperate searching)
RESULT: TRAPPED IN THE LOOP
But here’s what I didn’t see coming: the exploiters were deliberately targeting me in my most vulnerable state. The original wound was losing my child. The secondary wound was how they preyed on that trauma, creating an endless cycle that prevented healing.
💔 THE TRUTH I COULDN’T SEE
“They didn’t just profit from my pain. They created it, fed it, and kept it alive.”
This wasn’t just a habit anymore. This was conditioning. Exploiters knew I was already traumatized, and they built a system designed to keep me that way. They rewired my pain response, and I didn’t even notice it happening.
The Exploiters
I didn’t see it at first. I thought I was finding help. But every door I walked through was run by someone feeding the machine — keeping me in despair, keeping me circling, keeping me stuck.
The Echo Chamber — The Engine of Discard
It started with the echo chamber. Algorithms shoved simple slogans in my face: “No contact is healthy.” “Parents are toxic.”
Every time I clicked, it fed me more of the same. Every time I searched, the screen told me I was guilty. It didn’t matter what my story was — the machine had its story ready.
The echo chamber made a private rupture into a public trend. It erased the parent and amplified the child’s side until it sounded like truth.
Social Media Personalities
💰 THE INFLUENCER TRAP
What they said: “Toxic parents deserve no contact”
What I didn’t know: My despair was their content
The profit: Every view, comment, and share built their platform
On TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, I found faces staring back at me saying parents like me were the problem. Their voices were smooth, confident. They never ran out of things to say.
I didn’t realize then that my despair was their content. My comments, my views, my late-night scrolling — it all built their platform. If I healed, their views would drop. So they kept me drowning in negativity.
Authors and Speakers
📚 THE BOOK MILL
My Amazon history: 23 estrangement books in 6 months
Total spent: $347 on “healing”
Result: More guilt, no healing
At two in the morning, I ordered another book. Healing After Estrangement. Rules of No Contact.
Each one promised answers. None delivered healing. Every chapter pushed more guilt onto me. And when the pain didn’t stop, I bought the next book. What I thought was help was just another turn of the machine.
Therapists
🏥 THE THERAPY PIPELINE
My child’s therapist: “Cutting off is healthy boundaries”
My therapist: “You must have caused it”
The result: 3 generations in separate therapy offices
Even therapy became part of it. My child was told cutting me off was “healthy boundaries.” When I sought help, I was told I must have caused it.
Instead of healing, therapy created a pipeline: my adult child in one office, me in another, and someday my grandchildren in the next. One family’s fracture turned into three generations of income.
Support Group Admins and Community Leaders
I joined groups where parents like me gathered. At first, it felt safe. But soon I realized the rules: vent, despair, repeat.
When I mentioned forgiveness or the hope of reconciliation, my post was deleted. The admins weren’t there to help me heal. They were there to keep me loyal, to keep the numbers up. Pain was the glue that held the group together.
Churches and Faith Leaders
Even in church, I wasn’t safe. Sermons and counselors told me: “If you were a better parent, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Instead of comfort, I got more guilt. My faith, my last refuge, felt poisoned.
Every exploiter had a different method — attention, money, influence, control — but the fuel was the same: despair. They didn’t just profit from pain. They needed pain. Without it, the machine collapsed.
Why the Compulsion Worked
The compulsion worked because it preyed on three things I carried: love, doubt, and silence.
Love. I couldn’t just “shut off” the bond. Even cut, the instinct to repair stayed alive. Exploiters knew it and sold me content that scratched the repair instinct without ever fixing the wound.
Doubt. Every headline and every “expert” pointed the finger at parents. My self-questioning grew. Exploiters slid into that doubt with tidy explanations that blamed me — and desperate for answers, I took it on myself.
Silence. With my child gone and society blaming me, I was isolated. The silence was unbearable. Exploiters filled it with constant content, chatter, and promises. The noise felt like company — but it never led to healing.
The compulsion worked because it was predictable. Hurt → search → temporary proof → silence → doubt → return. And every turn kept me in the system, right where the exploiters profited.
What It Cost Me
The cost was more than time.
💔 THE REAL COST
Emotionally: Lost confidence, doubted my own memories and worth
Socially: Stigmatized and isolated - “You must have done something”
Physically: Blood pressure cuff by my bed, broken sleep, no appetite
Spiritually: Even my faith felt poisoned by guilt
💔 THE BOTTOM LINE
“The cost was heavy. Not just my child, but my sense of self.”
Recovery
My first act of recovery was naming the design. Once I saw the compulsion for what it was — hurt, search, crash, return — I was no longer just caught in it. I could step outside and say: This was built to keep me here.
Recovery didn’t mean erasing my love. It meant refusing to let that love be exploited. It meant refusing to let my pain become someone else’s product.
So I took small steps:
• I set a timer so I wouldn’t scroll past fifteen minutes.
• I started writing my story in my own words, not through someone else’s book.
• I called the one friend who didn’t flinch when I said, “My child cut me off.”
• I said out loud: I am a parent. I loved. That truth is not erased.
I didn’t heal in a week. Bonds built over decades don’t dissolve in days. But I began to recover my ground, piece by piece, by refusing to feed the machine.
Recovery meant recognizing that exploiters had deliberately targeted my trauma to create a second layer of harm. Breaking free required understanding that they profit from keeping family members trapped in cycles of false hope and deeper despair. As long as I stayed in their loop, healing was impossible.
⚠️ WARNING: THE MONEY TRAIL
The machine doesn’t just profit from our despair — it creates it, feeds it, and keeps it alive.
💸 FOLLOW THE MONEY
Every book sold: $15-30 profit
Every therapy session: $100-200 per hour
Every click/view: Ad revenue
Every group membership: Data to sell
The system makes money from broken families, so it has NO incentive to heal them.
🚨 THIS IS A WARNING:
They will double-traumatize you, and as long as you’re in their loop, you cannot heal.
How do you escape?
🛡️ YOUR ESCAPE PLAN
Stop feeding the machine. Set strict limits on consumption. Write your own story instead of reading theirs. Find one real person who won’t judge you. Remember that you are a parent who loved - that truth stands regardless of algorithms or influencers.
Recognize the pattern. When you feel that familiar hurt spike, notice the urge to reach for your phone. That’s the conditioning kicking in. Pause. Breathe. Choose differently.
Rebuild your identity outside their narrative. You are not the villain in their story. You are a parent who loved deeply enough to be devastated by loss.
Conclusion
Parental Discard is the erasure of parents in the 21st century. But the machine that profits from our pain is just as real as the original wound.
If you’re reading this in the dark at 2 a.m., if you’ve clicked and scrolled and bought and joined, if you’ve felt that moment of relief followed by the crash — you’re not alone. You’re not crazy. And you’re being deliberately targeted.
The bond lives on, even when they’re gone. But we don’t have to fund the industry that profits from your pain, or the many families who suffer daily.
💪 REMEMBER THIS
We are parents. You loved. That truth cannot be erased by algorithms, influencers, or even your own children’s silence.
